Hamilton enlisted as a Private in the Infantry, Co. F, 85th Ohio Volunteers during the Civil War on May 1862 and was discharged on September 1862. He then served in Co. B, 88th Ohio Volunteers and was discharged on July 3, 1865.

Hamilton is buried in Soldiers Home Graveyard in Dayton, OH
