Notes for Helen Elizabeth Darby

A very charming person. She loved children and could entertain them for hours with stories and such. Married John Hipp in 1929. He drank too much and abused her. They were divorced in early 1930. She then married Herbert Austin (also called Herb Green), a radio announcer from Philadelphia, PA (his radio name was "Allen Grant"). They remained married until after WWII. She went to europe during last stages of the war. They lived in old castles and such. He was a P.R. man for the eighth Army with a rank of Col., a real wheeler and dealer. Betty retuned to U.S. when she found out he had a German girlfriend. Divorce followed. She started teaching again in Chicago and remined there until she retired. She then went to Mt. Carmel to live with Jeannette and Arch. She lived there until 1980 after Jeannette died.

Helen is buried in Highland Memorial Cemetery in Mount Carmel, IL
Austin is buried in Maui Veterans Cemetery in Makawao, HI
