'Abraham Shambaugh is a native of Tippecanoe County, Indiana, born on the old homestead in Shelby Township, August 28, 1847, his parents, Jacob and Elizabeth (Cuppy) Shambaugh, being among the old and honored pioneers of the county. Jacob Shambaugh, the father of our subject, was born in Pennsylvania, and when a boy went to Ohio, where he grew to manhood, and was first married in that State. Shortly after his marriage he came to Indiana, and entered land on Coal Creek in the western part of the State. He liked the location in some respects, but the first season he spent there he lost all of his horses by milk sickness. He then left that locality and came to Tippecanoe County, and entered 160 acres of land in Shelby Township, his land being covered with timber, though there was at that time no underbrush. He put up a temporary log cabin which his family occupied until it was replaced by a log house, in which he made his home until his death, which occurred January 26, 1867. In politics he was an old line Whig, becoming a Rupublican on the organization of that party, with which he was identified until his death. He was a member of the United Brethren church, having been connected with that denomination from its infancy in this vicinity, and was always active in church matters. His first wife died after coming to this county, and he married for his second wife Mrs. Elizabeth McFarland, who was born October, 1808, and is yet living, making her home with her son Abraham, the subject of this sketch. She is also a member of the United Brethren church, and is a consistent Christian. Abraham Shambaugh was reared in Shelby Township, and his always live on the land on which his parents first settled in this county. He received seventeen acres of the homestead on the death of his father, and by his own pervsevering industry and good management he has added to it until he has accumlated 169 acres of choice landd, 149 acres of his land being well improved, with handsome and substantial residence, and farm buildings, and under fine cultivation. Mr. Shambaugh was married October 13, 1872, to Miss Mary Myers, a native of Ohio, and a daughter of Reuben and Eliza Myers, who now reside in Wabash Township, Tippecanoe County. Mr. and Mrs. Shambaugh are the parents of four children -- Sarah Agnes, Charles Edgar, Helen Myers and Raymond Lynn. Politically Mr. Shambaugh affiliates with the Republican party. He has held the office of constable for six years, performing the duties of that position with honor to himself and satisfaction to his constituents. He is a man of pronounced temperance principles, and can say that he was but once in a saloon, and then in the performance of his official duty. Mr. Shambaugh is a member of the Methodist church.
